Comedienne's Netflix series premieres next month

Maria Bamford is about to explode onto the mainstream comedy scene with her new Netflix series, Lady Dynamite, and now we have our first look at a trailer for the show, premiering May 20 on the popular streaming service.

In Bamford’s first starring role in a series, she portrays, well, Maria Bamford, or at least a fictionalized version of herself. The show focuses on Bamford’s mental breakdown — an extension of the comic’s successful stand-up act where she often based material on her own struggles with maintaining mental health. In one small glimpse we see her having a crying fit in a Target, presumably when Bamford filmed her popular holiday commercials for the retailer.

In Lady Dynamite, her struggle is very real, as she loses her mind and fights to regain control of her life. Along for the journey is her agent, Karen Grisham, played by SNL alum Ana Gasteyer; her parents, Marilyn and Joel (Mary Kay Place and Ed Begley Jr.); her friends Dagmar (Inside Amy Schumer‘s Bridget Everett) and Larissa (Lennon Parham, Playing House); and Fred Melamed and Sarah Silverman.

Arrested Development showrunner Mitchell Hurwitz co-created the series, which is a return to Netflix for Bamford. In 2012 she released the stand-up special, The Special Special Special.
