The crime drama will premiere in July
Few specifics have hit the web regarding HBO’s upcoming crime drama, The Night Of, and the channel is doing well to keep its details cryptic. Amid the uproar surrounding Beyoncé’s equally mysterious preview for Lemonade, a teaser for the eight-part series has popped up online.
The 50-second clip is an enigmatic exploration of a young man’s journey through the justice system. It features flashes of the boy with an unidentified girl, cuts to a dead body in the crime lab, and ends with scenes of him behind bars as he faces police interrogation. “What happened, Naz?” the officer asks as the boy stares down at his blood-stained hands.
According to HBO’s website, The Night Of “delves into the intricate story of a fictitious murder case in New York City,” spanning the investigation from questioning to courtroom, plus the accused’s purgatory on Riker’s Island.

A passion project of the late James Gandolfini, the show was originally greenlit in 2013 with the title Criminal Justice. It takes loose inspiration from the acclaimed 2008 BBC series of the same name, Deadline reports. Prior to his death later that year, Gandolfini was set to star as a New York City attorney who gets in over his head when he takes on the case of a Pakistani man (Riz Ahmed) charged with the murder of a girl on the Upper West Side.
Steven Zaillian (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), who helmed the original pilot, will serve as executive producer. He’ll also direct multiple episodes, with James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) set to direct one. John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) will replace Gandolfini as lead alongside Ahmed, Bill Camp, Payman Moaadi and Poorna Jagannathan. Michael Kenneth Williams, Amara Karan, Jeannie Berlin, and Glenne Headly have also joined the cast.
