Tituss Burgess is now one of the stars of Netflix’s Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, known for online wildfire like “Peeno Noir.” But it’s not too long ago that he was just a struggling actor grinding his way through bad auditions. Stephen Colbert is no stranger to that life either, and asked Burgess about his worst audition on Thursday’s The Late Show.
“I had this one audition, I won’t say the casting director’s name, but she was on the phone the whole time I sang,” Burgess said. “I was literally doing my audition, and she was on the phone. So I guess whatever it is she was ordering for lunch was more important than the high C’s I was belting out. And I also saw her recently on the street, and she saw me, and I just got on my phone and waved.”

The role of Kimmy Schmidt’s roommate Titus Andromedon may have given Burgess a break from the grind, but he told Colbert he wouldn’t want to room with the character.
“He is a nightmare,” Burgess said. “He is broke. I’d be paying for everything. And he’d be eating all my food. I don’t play when it comes to food.”
