American Idol went out with a bang featuring various performances from Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and Jennifer Lopez. But the finale episode also paid respects to one of the biggest musical influences of our time: David Bowie

Idol veterans Phillip Phillips, Lee DeWyze, David Cook, Kris Allen, and Nick Fradiani took the stage with their guitars in hand to perform a medley of Bowie hits including “Starman,” “Rebel Rebel,” and “The Jean Genie.”

Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe explained the moment to The Hollywood Reporter: “There was this little thing that went out in the press called ‘white guys with guitars,’ WGWG. So I put them all together, with their guitars, all doing this incredible Bowie tribute medley.”

He continued, “I promise you, if they went out on tour, and each did 20 minutes in their own right and 20 minutes together, this is a sell-out tour, they’re so good together. The WGWG tour.”

The quintet posted behind-the-scenes shots of their rehearsal sessions on Instagram.
