'He was the best country singer that ever lived,' Ben Haggard writes
After country star Merle Haggard’s death on Wednesday artists like Carrie Underwood, Willie Nelson, and Jason Aldean shared messages about the late star, but the most touching tribute to Haggard came from his 22-year-old son Ben.
Ben Haggard, who is a country singer in his own right and played guitar for his father on tour, shared a photo of himself and his father holding hands. Ben calls Haggard, who died on his 79th birthday, “the best country singer that ever lived.”
“A week ago dad told us he was gonna pass on his birthday, and he wasn’t wrong. A hour ago he took his last breath surrounded by family and friends,” Ben wrote. “He loved everything about life and he loved that everyone of you gave him a chance with his music. He wasn’t just a country singer.. He was the best country singer that ever lived.”
