Weeks after becoming one of the election cycle’s most popular memes, New Jersey governor Chris Christie explained to Jimmy Fallon why he looked so forsaken during Donald Trump’s Super Tuesday victory speech.

“This is what you would look like if you were standing behind Jay Leno when he was doing his monologue,” he joked to Fallon during Friday’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. After the crowd jeered his crack, Christie expanded on what he meant. “If you’re used to talking, it’s awkward not to talk. So if you’re standing there, I’m listening. What are you supposed to look like?”

During Trump’s victory speech, Christie looked uncomfortable enough that he later had to tell reporters he wasn’t being “held hostage” by Trump. “No, I wasn’t being held hostage. No, I wasn’t sitting up there thinking, ‘Oh, my God, what have I done?'” Christie said last month.

Asked by Fallon on Friday why he decided to endorse Trump for the Republican nomination, Christie said he found Trump better than John Kasich or Ted Cruz. “It’s not really hard. It was my judgement I thought he was better than the other two,” he said.

So if Trump calls Christie to become part of his ticket as vice president, would he accept? “I have a hard time believing anyone would ask me to be vice president,” Christie said, before gesturing to the life-size cardboard cut-out of his Super Tuesday appearance, which Fallon had brought out during the interview. “Because of that.”
