After two-and-a-half hours of nonstop explosions, space chases, and nostalgia, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ends on a quieter note: the wordless meeting between Jedi Master Luke Skywalker and young adept Rey, as the latter holds out Luke’s old lightsaber. To understand the power of this moment, it’s important to remember the journey that lightsaber has gone through over the course of all seven Star Wars movies. Luckily, YouTube user Christopher Sherwood just released a new video, “Path of a Lightsaber,” that tracks the weapon’s unlikely trajectory.

As the video shows, Anakin Skywalker was once dazzled by the lightsaber of Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn. Anakin later got a lightsaber of his own, though using it to murder little kids and old men wasn’t nearly as “civilized” as Obi-Wan Kenobi later made it out to be. The discrepancies between the two trilogies’ versions of events is well-known, but this video mashes up older Obi-Wan dialogue about the lightsaber with prequel footage for an interesting effect. Later, of course, after Anakin went to the Dark Side, Obi-Wan destroyed his body and took the lightsaber. He passed it on to Luke, only for the latter to lose it in the first big duel with his father.

Somehow Maz Kanata found it (a missing step in the journey that has yet to be elaborated on) and gave it to Finn when Rey initially refused. Finn didn’t last long against Kylo Ren, who wanted the lightsaber for himself, but this is a weapon that chooses its own path. It called out to Rey, and now she’s brought it back to Luke. We’ll have to wait for Episode VIII to see the next part of this journey.
