Sofia Coppola to remake Clint Eastwood drama The Beguiled
After exiting Universal’s live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, Sofia Coppola has set her sights on The Beguiled. The writer-director is developing a remake of the 1971 Southern Gothic drama that starred Clint Eastwood as an injured Yankee soldier whose presence inflames tensions at all-girls boarding school in Louisiana.
Sources familiar with the project, which is set up at Universal’s specialty division Focus Features, say no actor deals are in place yet, but EW has confirmed that Elle Fanning is in talks for a role. The actress previously worked with Coppola on Somewhere.
Coppola’s last film as a director was the 2013 teen crime drama The Bling Ring; she also helmed the Netflix holiday special A Very Murray Christmas last year. She departed The Little Mermaid in June over creative differences.
