Michelle Monaghan has joined Mark Wahlberg and John Goodman in Patriots Day, the forthcoming drama about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the citywide manhunt for the perpetrators.

The Gone Baby Gone and True Detective actress will portray Carol Saunders, the wife of Wahlberg’s Sgt. Tommy Saunders, CBS Films and Lionsgate announced Tuesday. Both are composite characters.

Goodman is portraying then-Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis, whose firsthand account serves as the basis for Matt Charman’s script. The cast also includes J.K. Simmons, Jimmy O. Yang, Vincent Curatola, and James Colby.

“In the aftermath of the attack heroes appeared from every corner of Boston,” director Peter Berg said in a statement Tuesday. “Michelle is a remarkable actress who knows the people of this city and understands their courage and strength.”

Monaghan was last seen on the big screen in Pixels, and she has a starring role in the Hulu series The Path, which debuts Wednesday.

Patriots Day is scheduled to open in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston on Dec. 21 before going nationwide on Jan. 13.
