'We were both covered in mud, bruised up and bleeding by the end,' the singer says of shooting the 'Close' music video.
Swedish star Tove Lo may have worked with some of the biggest names in pop — signing to hitmaker Max Martin’s songwriting collective in 2011, recording with her countryman Alesso, and writing smashes for Ellie Goulding — but there was one thing her resume was missing. “I’ve never interacted with another artist in a video before,” the 28-year-old tells EW via email.
But when working with Nick Jonas for his new song “Close,” her nerves were quickly calmed by the actor/pop star, who has a long history in front of the camera. “Watching him really giving it all triggered me to do the same,” she says. “You feed off each other’s energy. We were both covered in mud, bruised up, and bleeding by the end of the shoot—but still with big smiles on our faces. It was awesome.”
She speaks equally as highly of recording with the 23-year-old: “I’ve known Nick as a friend for a couple of years, and working with him was amazing. He’s very talented and I fell in love with the song as soon as I heard the demo.”
Jonas teased the clip, the first taste of his new album album Last Year Was Complicated, due out June 10, Thursday afternoon on Twitter, writing, “This music video is gonna require a few cold showers afterwords…” before tagging Lo. And while that’s definitely true, the song comes from a much less-steamy place. Along with the collection’s title, Jonas revealed the lead single is about how he “literally can’t open up and be vulnerable with someone.”
The entire collection looks poised to be heartbreak-themed. Jonas explained on social media, “When I first started making [Last Year Was Complicated] I thought I knew what it would be about… Then I had a breakup. It then became very clear what this thing would be about… And that I would need to dig really deep… S–t is too real sometimes… Reliving some of these real life experiences through this music is hard.”
The video for “Close,” directed by Tim Erem, is streaming below. The collection, due out June 10, is currently available for pre-order. Jonas is launching a massive summer trek with Demi Lovato, kicking off April 24, those dates are available on the singer’s website.
