Hear Sturgill Simpson cover Nirvana's 'In Bloom', off upcoming album
As country traditionalist Sturgill Simpson approaches the April 15 release of his anticipated, third studio LP, A Sailor’s Guide to Earth, he’s sharing the set’s second single, a striking cover of Nirvana’s 1991 tune “In Bloom.” Simpson simplifies the Seattle rockers’ arrangements — and ditches a heavy dose of their angst — to leave listeners with a fascinating, inviting meditation on the relationship between a musician and his fans.
Simpson announced his upcoming album earlier this month and debuted the lead single on Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio show. He told host Zane Lowe at the time that his goal for the collection was to try something new, saying, “I already made Metamodern [Sounds in Country Music]. So I didn’t want to make another psychedelic country record. But as soon as I open my mouth, it’s always going to be a country record. You’re always a little nervous because people might expect more of the same or they might not be as willing to take the journey with you, but I think any of the true fans probably wouldn’t expect anything less.”
Earth, which Simpson has also said (via a release) is a letter addressed to his first child who arrived in 2014, is due out April 15 via Atlantic Records. The collection is currently available for pre-order.
