Taylor Kitsch is heading back to Texas for his feature directorial debut, Pieces, EW has confirmed.

Kitsch is also writing, producing, and starring in the indie, based on his short film of the same name, which premiered at the 2014 Palm Springs International ShortFest. The drama centers on three best friends from Detroit and the life-altering aftermath of intercepting a drug run.

Pieces sees Kitsch reteam with a trio of producers past: Randall Emmett, George Furla, and Peter Berg. Emmett and Furla, whose production company Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films will finance the movie, worked alongside Kitsch when he played strapping Navy SEAL Michael Murphy in Lone Survivors. Berg also worked on Lone Survivors, though his relationship with Kitsch traces back to the actor’s five-year run as the reckless Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights, on which Berg served as executive producer. Pieces is set to shoot this summer in Texas—the same state where Friday Night Lights was filmed.

Kitsch’s most recent credits include a starring role in the Emmy-winning Normal Heart and a second season stint on True Detective as the tough-but-troubled cop Paul Woodrugh. He’s also set to appear in Xavier Dolan’s upcoming drama,The Death and Life of John F. Donovan.
