Sia is sticking to wigs and Maddie Ziegler for her new music video, a dance-heavy clip accompanying her latest This Is Acting single, “Cheap Thrills.”
After working with her on several live performances and music videos for singles including “Chandelier,” “Big Girls Cry,” and “Elastic Heart,” the singer-songwriter reteams with the 13-year old dance prodigy (and Dance Moms star) for the “Cheap Thrills” video, which features Sia firmly planted at the edge of a large, square-shaped projection of purple light as Ziegler leads two male dancers through a series of unhinged choreography. Sia’s work with Ziegler has thus far been viewed online over two billion times around the world.
Sia co-directed the “Cheap Thrills” music video with Daniel Askill. The track was originally written for inclusion on Rihanna’s ANTI, though the singer told Rolling Stone that the Barbadian pop star ultimately rejected the track. “I went into the studio to write for Rihanna with Kanye [West] and neither of them showed up,” Sia told Rolling Stone of the song. “I realized just as soon as I was cutting it that it sounded a little bit too Brit-pop for her. It’s more Icona Pop. We did actually send it to her, but they passed on it, and then I just couldn’t stop listening to it in the car.”
Ziegler is set to star in the upcoming film from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, The Book of Henry, alongside Naomi Watts, Jacob Tremblay, and Sarah Silverman.
Last year, she told EW that she met Sia when the star tweeted at her. “I didn’t even see [the tweet]—it was my mom or someone on my team that saw it, and I was like, ‘This isn’t even real. Someone’s trying to prank me.’ I didn’t know what to expect, but the second she saw me, she just ran and gave me a big hug. We just felt like we knew each other, really.”
