Freeform is developing a transgender drama series with megaproducer Joel Silver and The Opposite of Sex filmmaker Don Roos.

The network formerly known as ABC Family has given a script order to New People, which is to tell the story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother, and their family. The series is inspired by Amy Ellis Nutt’s novel Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family, which was itself inspired by a true story.

Roos will pen the script and also serve as executive producer alongside Silver and Rodney Ferrell. Lionsgate Television, where Silver Pictures has a first-look deal, is also on board.

ABC Family previously explored the dynamics of a family with a transgender member in the reality series Becoming Us.
