Moments after making its debut at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, Sausage Party has its first trailer.
The R-rated animated movie from Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (This Is The End) had a work-in-progress screening in Austin on Monday night, and the response on social media to the movie was strong. “Sausage Party is literally the most insane, f—ed up movie that has ever made me cry laughing,” EW correspondent Kevin Sullivan wrote after the screening ended, one of a number of journalists to express similar sentiments.
Set in the world of food products, the film imagines the horror a sausage realizes upon discovering human beings eat the stuff they buy at grocery stores. The red-band trailer teases the film’s hard-R through language and food-related violence. “Once you see that sh–, it’ll f— you up for life,” a Twinkie tells Rogen’s sausage in the first look as a sequence that recalls Saving Private Ryan plays onscreen.
“I’m even shocked, and we made it,” Rogen said of the project after the film’s work-in-progress screening.
Featuring the voices of Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Nick Kroll, Bill Hader, Danny McBride, Paul Rudd, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton, and Salma Hayek, Sausage Party is out on Aug. 12. The film was directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, and produced by Megan Ellison and Annapurna Pictures. Watch the trailer below.
