Princess Diaries 3: Garry Marshall says Anne Hathaway wants to make new film
Anne Hathaway may soon be returning to Genovia.
Princess Diaries director Garry Marshall told PEOPLE that both he and Princess Mia Thermopolis herself (a.k.a. Hathaway) are planning to make a third movie in the series.
“I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” Marshall told PEOPLE. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”
Last summer, rumors started swirling that Disney and original Princess Diaries producer Debra Chase were launching a third installment — and that Hathaway may or may not be involved. At the time, a source close to Disney debunked the rumor, telling EW that the studio wasn’t working on a sequel or reboot of any kind.

Marshall and Hathaway teamed up for both the 2001 original film and the 2004 sequel Royal Engagement, based on Meg Cabot’s hit book series. Cabot published more than a dozen Princess Diaries books between 2000 and 2009, before returning to Mia’s story with the 2015 novel Royal Wedding.
As for Chris Pine, who starred opposite Hathaway in Royal Engagement and has said before that he’d love to return? (During an EW Q&A on Tumblr in January, a fan asked Pine, “Don’t you pray every night for a Princess Diaries 3?” Pine’s response: “Have you been reading my diary???”) Marshall says it’s a possibility.
“Maybe,” Marshall told PEOPLE. “He’s quite big now, you know.”
