A Hologram for the King

America’s favorite actor is a stranger in a strange land in the first trailer for A Hologram for the King. Tom Tykwer’s adaptation of Dave Eggers 2012 novel of the same name drops Tom Hanks’ American salesman, Alan Clay, in Saudi Arabia in order to sell a hologram-based communication technology to the king.

The clip introduces Hanks doing a parody of David Byrne’s anthem of commercial disillusionment, just as his comforting American life goes poof — sending him to the Middle East to redeem himself. There, he befriends his new driver and develops a romantic interest in a Saudi woman (Sarita Choudhury).

A Hologram for the King premieres April 22. It will be featured in the Spotlight section of 2016’s Tribeca Film Festival, which will run from April 13—24.
