James Franco is on edge in the new trailer for The Adderall Diaries, writer/director Pamela Romanowsky’s take on Stephen Elliot’s 2009 best-selling memoir that recounts a murder trial while also tackling the author’s substance abuse and troubles with his father.

Franco plays Elliot, while Ed Harris plays his estranged father, who vindictively tries to discredit his son’s work. This all happens while Elliot is digging into the murder trial of programmer Hans Reiser (Christian Slater).

Franco was initially going to write, direct, and star in the project, but ceded the first two responsibilities to Romanowsky.
