12 Monkeys is getting a little help from Downton Abbey.

Brendan Coyle, who played John Bates on the Emmy Award-winning PBS series, will guest-star in the 12 Monkeys premiere as what appears to be an ally — and EW has the exclusive first look.

As we first reported, Cole (Aaron Stanford) and Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) track this former Markridge bioengineer in Budapest in hopes of recruiting him in their efforts to stop the Army of the 12 Monkeys.

“He plays Dr. Benjamin Kalman… who suffers a kind of Oppenheimer-like guilt for the things he created at Markridge,” executive producer Terry Matalas says. “Kalman and Cole are kindred spirits in the respect that both men are trying to be something better than what they were. I’m a huge Downton Abbey fan and particularly a fan of how Brendan portrayed John Bates: gentle with a shade of darkness. Both qualities I wanted to see in Kalman.”

12 Monkeys will return for season 2 on Monday, April 18 at 9 p.m. ET on Syfy.

Syfy takes on the original time-traveling film in a weekly series format.
