At the U.S. premiere of The Brothers Grimsby on Thursday night, star Sacha Baron Cohen wore a red hat emblazoned with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s campaign slogan: “Make America Great Again.”
Holding a pint glass and fake handgun, Cohen, in character as Nobby from The Brothers Grimsby, endorsed Trump for president. Cohen was also photographed on the red carpet with people brandishing “Vote Trump” signs.
“Today, I am announcing my endorsement of Donald Trump for president,” Cohen as Nobby said at the premiere. In an interview with The Guardian, Cohen later joked, “He’s the ultimate football hooligan. He listens to what the other side says very carefully, and then he beats the bloody crap out of them. His rallies… I wasn’t into him until I went to one of his rallies. It’s a bit like English soccer matches. There’s violence. There’s shouting. There’s abuse. The only difference is we don’t throw out our black people.”
Cohen’s new film takes direct aim at Trump in the form of a controversial joke revealed Thursday. In The Brothers Grimsby, Trump, who appears via stock news footage, is infected with HIV after being sprayed by infected blood. (A news anchor later remarks that Trump has contracted AIDS in the world of the movie.)
Cohen and Trump have sparred as far back as 2003, when Cohen interviewed the former reality television host as Ali G. Trump walked out of that discussion, and later wrote on Twitter, “I never fall for scams. I am the only person who immediately walked out of my ‘Ali G’ interview.”
Recently, Cohen, in character as Borat, compared Trump’s brain to “a female chicken.”
