It’s certainly not a stretch to assume Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe are an item in real life – their palpable, on-screen chemistry is one of the reasons Starz’ Outlander is such a kilty pleasure with fans.

But the actors not only deny that they’re dating, they’re actually a little exhausted by the constant questioning.

“Honestly I’m tired of that conversation,” Balfe, who plays Claire Fraser, tells EW. “This is fantasy. This is our job. We are very different in our private life. We are best friends. From the moment we met, we got along. Sam is one of the most generous people you’ll ever meet. Such a great guy, no ego involved.”

Heughan, in fact, feels badly that some fans seem genuinely let down they aren’t in a romantic relationship. “It saddens me a bit but I guess that means we’ve done a good job,” says Heughan (Jamie Fraser) to EW. “I don’t know. It’s a strange one. I’m still coming to terms with what it’s like to have people follow your personal life as well as your public life. It gets amusing. But she’s just wonderful. We’re very good friends.”

At least he can keep a sense of humor about it.

“I think I’m just waiting for the moment that she’s had too much whiskey and then we’ll agree to it,” jokes Heughan.
