Electronic hip-hop and bounce singer Big Freedia is being charged with theft of government funds in New Orleans, a charge filed Tuesday states.

The city alleges she (according to Freedia’s official website, the male artist, born Freddie Ross Jr., prefers to be identified with feminine pronouns) received funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development after falsely reporting income.

In a statement to EW, Big Freedia called the charge an “incredibly unfortunate situation” and said, “It was an oversight – but one that I take full responsibility for. From the moment I was contacted by Government agents, I have fully cooperated and have already begun making arrangements to pay full restitution (of approximately $34,000).”
