Steve Martin recently performed stand-up comedy for the first time in 35 years. He also co-created a new Broadway musical, Bright Star. But when it came time Monday night to join Jimmy Fallon onstage for The Tonight Show, Martin simply didn’t want to go. He even sang why not, in a song called “I Don’t Want To Do This Show.”

“I used up all my stories when I was in my 40s, but now I’m 52 years old and I don’t want to do this show,” Martin sang (his real age is 70). “I’ve got plenty to promote, but I’ve got no anecdotes. I guess I’ll do the best I can.”

Martin sought advice from various people in the hallway between his dressing room and the stage. Each one that told him to talk about the Oscars or the Super Bowl got a slap in the face (“yesterday’s news!”), until one finally told him to discuss his new musical. When Martin finally took the stage, Fallon joined in for the final verse: “Now we’re doing the show.”
