"The goal whenever we do a record is to have it be nothing like the one before," singer Alison Mosshart says of duo's process.

Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince, who write and record as the Kills, are set to return early the summer with brand new music. Tuesday, the rockers shared that their fifth full-length, Ash & Ice, is due to release June 3 and debuted the set’s first single, “Doing It To Death” via their Facebook page. In an accompanying note, they thanked fans for their patience — the last Kills record dropped back in 2011 — while they “perfected our craft, sharpened our teeth and made the journey from first note to last.”

When EW spoke to Mosshart last September in advance of Jack White’s supergroup the Dead Weather’s third LP, the singer discussed the delay between the Kills’ albums. “[We’re] different,” she told EW. “It’s a really long-winded process. There’s endless programming — picking a sort of genre-style for a song and pouring over the words and trying to harmoniously mix and match all the stuff to make it feel like it always was. That’s really hard with only two people because I really only sing and play guitar badly. So Jamie’s got a lot to do! [Laughs]”

With each release Hince and Mosshart charter new sonic terrain intentionally. “The goal whenever we do a record is to have it be nothing like the one before,” she says. “That gets harder and harder because you instinctually do what you do — you have to find the trick, the thing that takes it out of your comfort zone and challenging.”
