Chris Rock didn’t waste any time addressing the elephant in the room when he took the stage as host of Sunday’s 88th annual Academy Awards ceremony. In his opening monologue, the comedian called the telecast the “White People’s Choice Awards,” defended his choice to continue as host as others chose not to attend (“They’re not going to cancel the Oscars because I quit, and the last thing I need is to lose another job to Kevin Hart”), and assessed how Hollywood is “sorority racist” (“It’s like, ‘We like you Rhonda, but you’re not a Kappa’”).
