Oscars host Chris Rock came through on his word and tackled the #OscarsSoWhite controversy during his opening monologue. His joke about Jada Pinkett Smith and Rihanna’s panties was just a bonus.

The Internet fueled largely positive reactions. While the likes of Stephen King, Ellen DeGeneres, and Oprah praised Rock’s gusto, American civil rights activist DeRay Mckesson took the opportunity to note “real things to protest,” such as police brutality and the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, still exist.

During his monologue, Rock also threw a jab at Jada Pinkett Smith, who boycotted the Oscars over the #OscarsSoWhite controversy. “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties,” he said. “I wasn’t invited.”
