From the title character in How Stella Got Her Groove Back to numerous roles in Ryan Murphy’s American Horry Story franchise, Angela Bassett has tackled a variety of memorable characters. But while she’s been a respected name in Hollywood and on the Broadway stage for more than three decades, Bassett tells EW not all of her acting opportunities came without a struggle.
“Of all the roles that I’ve had in my career, the one that I fought the hardest to get, bar none, 100 percent was Tina Turner,” the actress reveals in a Beyond Beautiful video for Entertainment Weekly.
Bassett explained that the creative team behind 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do With It wasn’t sure she could sing, dance, or convincingly portray the legendary R&B star. “It was rough and tough but that one role in particular let me know what I was made of,” she continues. “That strong stuff. I don’t quit, I fight.”
If she could offer advice to her younger self, the New York native says she’d recommend not be afraid of anything.
“Get out there and try everything,” Bassett says. “Do it all. Speak up. Be bold, be bad. Just live it.”
