Before Vin Diesel rides again in Fast 8, he’ll reprise another signature character.

Paramount Pictures has slotted xXx: The Return of Xander Cage for a Jan. 20, 2017 release date.

The third xXx finds Xander coming out of a self-imposed exile to face off against a deadly alpha warrior named Xiang. Racing against Xiang and his team to recover a seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box, Xander recruits an all-new group of extreme cohorts and finds himself enmeshed in a vast conspiracy that suggests corruption in the world’s most powerful governments.

It’s the first xXx film since the 2005 sequel — State of the Union starring Ice Cube — and the first to star Diesel since the original arrived in 2002. The Cube-led project recouped its budget ($71 million worldwide on a $60 million budget), while Diesel’s was a box-office hit ($277.4 million worldwide on a $70 million budget).

Diesel most recently appeared in The Last Witch Hunter, which was released last October to poor reception.

The Return of Xander Cage stars Samuel L. Jackson, Nina Dobrev, Ruby Rose, and Deepika Padukone. D.J. Caruso (I Am Number Four) directs from a screenplay by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen) with revisions by F. Scott Frazier (Collide).
