Without experiencing it for yourself, it’s hard to explain how a video of a California teen filming his friend’s shoes and saying “Damn, Daniel” — and “back at it again with the white Vans!” — has cleared over 45 million views in just nine days. The Internet is mercurial.

In a Wednesday appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the teens behind the viral video — Josh and, of course, Daniel — were at least able to explain ther superhero origin story.

As Josh, 15, tells it, it simply occurred to him one day to film Daniel’s shoes while saying “Damn, Daniel” and make it part of his Snapchat story. Daniel, 14, had no idea Josh was going to do that, but was game for subsequent clips — all filmed during “6th period” — after their classmates seemed to enjoy the first. Josh then combined the clips into one video and posted it on Twitter, and the rest is very strange Internet history.

With Internet fame came marriage proposals, and while Daniel is not quite ready to get married before his sophomore year, he has been enjoying the attention from girls. And thanks to DeGeneres, he can impress them with his lifetime supply of Vans.
