When production commenced on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, a press release went out announcing the two previously rumored additions to the cast — Kurt Russell and Pom Klementieff — and one no one had known about — Elizabeth Debicki.

The 25-year-old Australia native has quickly risen to stardom, after being cast in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby straight out of drama school, but joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe marks a new high for Debicki, whose next big project has her working alongside a significant player in the superhero series: Tom Hiddleston.

The two appear in the BBC and AMC’s adaptation of John le Carré’s The Night Manager, and Hiddleston was one of the first people Debicki told about the role in Guardians. “He was excited, and I was excited to tell him,” Debicki says over the phone from Atlanta, where James Gunn’s sequel recently began shooting. “It’s such a little family.”

Though Marvel Studios is somewhat notorious for its exhaustive audition process, Debicki expressed surprise at the mention of reputation. “It was quite painless. It was a really enjoyable audition experience,” she says. “I’m surprised to hear that they’re legendary. For me, it was kind of great. It was fun.”

Like all casting news that comes out of Marvel without a character connected to it, Debicki’s announcement came with a flurry of possibility. Was she Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel? (Almost definitely not.) What about Phlya-Vell? Or Thanos’ romantic obsession, the Marvel Universe’s personification of Death?

Debicki isn’t saying. In fact, she wouldn’t even say which aspects of her character were exciting to her, other than playing someone from a much different world than our own. “I don’t trust myself. I’m like Jed,” she said, referring to her Night Manager character. “Any second I’m going to slip up.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
