Annalise Keating, what have you done?
During Thursday’s episode of How to Get Away with Murder, flashbacks to 10 years prior reveal that Annalise (Viola Davis) was working on the Mahoney case, in which the heir to the Mahoney fortune (Wilson Bethel) is on trial for murder. As part of the case, Annalise says she has to go to Cleveland… which we later discover is where Rose (Kelsey Scott) and Christophe live.
After briefly meeting in a park during last week’s episode, Rose meets her new friend for coffee, only to discover that Annalise is actually a lawyer on the Mahoney case. Fearful, Rose wants to run, but Annalise says she wants to protect Rose and her son Christophe. Could Wes’ mother be a star witness for the prosecution that Annalise wants to manipulate? And could Annalise then have played a role in Rose’s death?
“The only response I’m going to give here is to refer back to the last scene of our midseason finale,” executive producer Pete Nowalk tells EW. “Eve [Famke Janssen] and Annalise. Watching Christophe be interrogated about Rose’s death. What did they do?”
Meanwhile, back in the present, Wes (Alfred Enoch) gets locked in a psych ward after jokingly threatening to kill himself. When Annalise refuses to help spring him, Laurel (Karla Souza) reveals the truth to the rest of the Keating Five, who stage a walkout. However, it won’t be long before they’re all back in her orbit. Not only did Annalise hand over the Mahoney file to Wes, but Connor (Jack Falahee) received a video file that shows the real truth about what happened on the most recent Murder Night, potentially sent by Phillip (Jefferson White).
“Annalise is going to handle it in typical fashion: by doing the thing nobody expects,” Nowalk says. “And the only thing that’s safe to say is that the team is freaked the ‘F’ out — even Annalise, who has enough on her plate dealing with Wes right now.”
Still, that’s not even the most shocking reveal of the hour. After Laurel tries to get Frank (Charlie Weber) to open up, he confesses he killed Lila (Megan West) — though why he did that as a favor to Sam (Tom Verica) remains to be seen. “It puts a dilemma in her lap,” Nowalk says. “What does she do with this information? Does she tell anyone? I think she’s smart enough to know that, whatever she does, there will be consequences, especially now that she officially knows Frank is the Fishtown strangler.”
How to Get Away with Murder airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
