Hail to the chief — and the King.

EW can exclusively reveal the theatrical release date and latest poster for Elvis & Nixon, Liza Johnson’s comedy-drama about Elvis Presley’s historic meeting with President Richard Nixon at the White House in 1970.

The film, which stars Michael Shannon as Presley and Kevin Spacey as Nixon, will open April 22.

Underscoring the notion that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, Elvis & Nixon recounts the fateful December morning when the King of Rock ’n’ Roll showed up on the lawn of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to request a meeting with POTUS. Presley was indeed granted an audience with Nixon, and asked to become a “federal agent at large” to help fight the war on drugs.

The confab was immortalized in an Oval Office photo, which is said to be the most requested image in the National Archives.

Elvis & Nixon is written by Joey Sagal, Hanala Sagal, and Cary Elwes. The cast also includes Alex Pettyfer, Johnny Knoxville, Colin Hanks, and Sky Ferreira. Amazon Studios and Bleecker Street are distributing the film.
