Andy Daly is heading out of the Forrest and over to ABC.
The Review actor will star with Anna Gunn in the network’s single-camera comedy pilot Chunk & Bean, which follows the unlikely friendship of two kids who live next door to each other with two extremely different sets of parents.
Breaking Bad vet and two-time Emmy winner Gunn plays Connie Dawson, Chunk’s hard-lining mother, a psychologist who works from home. Gunn’s recent credits include The Mindy Project, Gracepoint, Portlandia, and Criminal Minds. (She appeared in the Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders spin-off-setting up episode last spring but later departed the project). Daly will play Connie’s husband/family patriarch Stuart Dawson.
Chunk & Bean‘s pilot script is penned by Ed Herro and Brian Donovan (both writers on The Neighbors), who loosely based the show on their own childhood. Chunk & Bean, which also includes Adam Rodriguez as Bean’s father, Jim Rogerson, is executive-produced by Dave Hemingson (Don’t Trust the B— in Apt. 23, How I Met Your Mother).
While Daly looks to a new project, he will be saying goodbye to his regular gig on Comedy Central’s critically admired yet modestly rated Review as Forrest MacNeil, a professional critic who reviews life experiences. The series will return for a third and final season, with a yet-to-be-determined number of episodes. (The Hollywood Reporter first reported this news.)
Daly released a statement to EW about the decision to end Review — and how he wound up on Chunk & Bean. “Comedy Central came to us with the idea of wrapping up Forrest’s story in a third season, which sounded like an idea with a lot of potential and we’ve come up with a bunch of things I’m really excited to do,” he said. “With any luck, viewers will finally find out whether life is any good! Stay tuned! We haven’t nailed down an exact number of episodes for the season but it’s probably fewer than a million. (Is that helpful?)
“In the middle of planning for Review‘s third season, I was sent a really funny script for a pilot with a character that’s described as an ‘Andy Daly type’ and I thought, ‘I’ll bet I can pull this off! Good lord, I hope I’m right! It’s called Chunk & Bean and Anna Gunn will be playing my wife, so she’ll finally get a REAL actor to play her husband on a TV show! Anyway, I’m super excited to dust off the tan blazer and whatever my new character wears too!”
Daly, a Mad TV alum who was also part of Eastbound and Down, has been seen all over tube recently, guest-starring in such comedies as Silicon Valley, Modern Family, black-ish, and Grandfathered. He also has been heard all over, lending his voice to animated shows like Adventure Time, Rick and Morty, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Bob’s Burgers.
