Zayn Malik made his solo TV debut on Wednesday, premiering a new track from his upcoming album, Mind of Mine.
Compared to the more upbeat “Pillowtalk” — which hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts in its first week — “It’s You” is a moody, mournful lament. Malik’s dramatic performance of the song on The Tonight Show was accompanied by female backup singers and a light that projected words — presumably the song’s lyrics, it’s hard to tell — onto him.
It’s not yet clear whether “It’s You” will be Malik’s next single, or whether the song was brought out just for The Tonight Show.
Malik has also revealed the album art for Mind of Mine, which is more than a little reminiscent of Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III (2008) and IV (2011), depicting the singer as a child but with his tattoos as an adult Photoshopped onto his younger self.
The album is out March 25 — one year to the day that Malik announced via a statement on One Direction’s Facebook page that he was leaving the band to be a “normal 22-year-old.” Check out his performance above.
