Toni Morrison, the celebrated author of Beloved, The Bluest Eye, and most recently, 2015’s God Help the Child, turns 85 Thursday.

To honor this living legend, let’s look back at her New York Times Magazine video from last year, where she rhapsodizes about a life of writing. “I know how to write forever,” she says in the clip. “I don’t think I could have happily stayed here in the world if I did not have a way of thinking about it.” We’re so grateful Morrison has given us a way of thinking about the world, too.
