“In keeping with our desire to bring the best of Broadway to our live musicals, we’ve assembled the Broadway dream team of Tony Award winners for Hairspray Live!,’” said NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt in a statement.
Kenny Leon, who directed The Wiz Live!, will be back to spearhead the new musical, along with producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. They’ll be joined by several Hairspray alums, including choreographer Jerry Mitchell and script adaptor Harvey Fierstein, who also won a Tony for playing Edna Turnblad in the Broadway production.
Hairspray Live! debuts Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
