Zendaya was among the celebrities to pay some passing tribute to David Bowie on the Grammys’ red carpet Monday night, wearing a pant suit and mullet wig to much acclaim during the ceremony pre-show.

“We’re always inspired by the past, we kind of wanted to give this a vintage feel,” she said to PEOPLE and EW, before adding that she loved seeing women in suits. “And then I gave them a little mullet. Because why not?” Zendaya joked.

But despite owning the red carpet, Zendaya’s night ended in some small disappointment. When asked by PEOPLE and EW who she was most excited to see perform during the Grammys, she said Rihanna. The Anti singer dropped out of the Grammys at the last minute, however, due to illness.

“Based on Rihanna’s examination after Grammy rehearsal today, Rihanna’s doctor put her on vocal rest for 48 hours because she was at risk of hemorrhaging her vocal cords,” her reps said in a statement to EW. “The antibiotics she has been on for three days did not kill the infection adequately, therefore she cannot perform safely.”
