Last Week Tonight With John Oliver

  • TV Show

John Oliver recently told EW that Last Week Tonight”s election coverage “is more likely to be about the process than the people.” Sure enough, when Last Week Tonight returned from hiatus Sunday night, Oliver’s first monologue of the year didn’t even mention late-night comedy staple Donald Trump. Instead, the host went deep on the more institutional issue of voter ID laws.

Oliver noted that several states have recently ramped up requirements for showing forms of ID at voting booths. Oliver played clips of state lawmakers in states like Nevada and South Carolina passing this off like standard procedure, but it does have an effect — Oliver cited, among other data, a Texas Tribune report showing that over 500,000 registered voters in Texas lacked the IDs required by new laws. Not everyone, it turns out, does have a driver’s license on hand, and these laws have ended up disproportionately affecting black and Latino voters.

“It’s just one of those things that white people seem to be more likely to have,” Oliver said of state IDs. “Like a sunburn, or an Oscar nomination.”

Legislators have argued that such laws are necessary to stop voter fraud, but Oliver pointed out that such crimes are pointless and barely significant — like this video of a crab with a knife.

“Voter ID is a problem the way deadly knife play from crabs is a problem,” Oliver said. “I’m not saying it doesn’t exist, there are cases where it has happened, but let’s not overreact to one stabby crab.”

Oliver then aired clips of lawmakers slipping up and admitting that the laws had affects on voting. One Republican state party chairman in particular credited voter ID laws with cutting President Barack Obama’s support in the 2012 election.

“Oh no, you’re saying the thing everyone knows but you’re not supposed to say out loud,” Oliver said. “That’s like writing ‘I’m desperate to bone’ on an online dating profile, or a band calling their reunion tour ‘We Ran Out of Money.’ “
