UPDATE: Miramax announced Saturday that it has acquired North American distribution rights for Southside With You from IM Global. The studio will partner with Roadside Attractions for U.S. theatrical distribution of the film, which will likely be set for late summer 2016.

EARLIER: The story of Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date could be released by two marquee distributors.

Miramax is in negotiations with IM Global and WME Global to acquire the North American distribution rights for Southside With You, the studio confirmed to EW. If a deal is completed, Miramax would partner with Roadside in its U.S. distribution of the film.

Southside With You marks the directorial debut of writer Richard Tanne (Worst Friends). The film, which is inspired by true events, unfolds over one day in Chicago during the summer of 1989, when Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) and Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) worked in the same Chicago law offices. The movie centers on their first date as the pair slowly reveal more and more about themselves and their families.

Southside With You debuted at Sundance on Jan. 24.

“As formulaic and overly sentimental as some of this is,” EW’s Chris Nashawaty wrote, “it never loses its hold on you because you keep spotting little hints of the people we know these two will become.”
