Scandal: Katie Lowes talks sex scenes in 'It's Hard Out Here for a General'
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from “It’s Hard Out Here for a General,” Thursday’s episode of Scandal.
No TGIT return is complete without a steamy sex scene, and Scandal certainly delivered — and within the first five minutes no less. While it must have been all kinds of awkward to film that scene between Olivia and Jake, costar Katie Lowes reveals that the discomfort doesn’t end when the cameras stop rolling.
Lowes — who plays Quinn — sat down with EW editor Henry Goldblatt to talk about the recent episode, which the entire cast watched together.

“When really steamy stuff comes on, it’s so awkward to be sitting on a couch next to Scott [Foley] or Tony [Goldwyn] or Kerry [Washington], and these are all your dear friends, and their significant others are all your dear friends,” Lowes says. “I always hide behind my hand, I can’t handle it.”
But Lowes is no stranger to raunchy scenes; Quinn has had some crazy moments with Huck (Guillermo Díaz) and Charlie (George Newbern) throughout the seasons. Despite the awkwardness, Lowes says she feels like she “won the lottery.”
“I just feel really lucky because it’s so safe,” Lowes explains, referring to her close friendships with Díaz, Newbern, and their families. “It’s a very, like, ‘All right, it’s awkward, let’s just get this done. You need a mint?’ kind of thing.”
