This month, HBO will be airing a documentary on the life and work of legendary filmmaker Mike Nichols. Perhaps best known as an Oscar-winning director (The GraduateThe BirdcageWorking Girl), Nichols is also an icon in the realms of comedy and Broadway for a career that began as one half of the improv sensation, Nichols and May, and his multiple Tony Awards for writing and direction in theater.

Becoming Mike Nichols explores each chapter of Nichols’s career, navigated by a conversation between the late filmmaker — who died in 2014 — and fellow director Jack O’Brien. He’s completely honest, extremely witty, and, as always, charming. In the doc’s first trailer, Nichols describes his initial meeting with Elaine May in the 1950s, and later teases the unlikely casting of Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate.

Becoming Mike Nichols premieres Monday, Feb. 22 at 9:00 p.m. on HBO.
