With Deadpool‘s marketing campaign in full swing, and the raucous superhero movie set to invade cinemas this weekend, it’s easy to forget that the film almost never saw the light of day. In his interview with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night, star Ryan Reynolds reiterated that he spent 11 years trying to get the movie made.

“It was the worst relationship I’ve ever been in,” Reynolds said. “On-again, off-again. Occasionally we sleep together and it just causes more pain. And then somehow, someway, we got married.”

Reynolds reiterated that the main reason Fox finally greenlit the movie was overwhelming fan response to test footage that leaked online a few years ago. Reynolds wouldn’t come out and say that he did it, but the footage’s release was so crucial he knows it’s likely that one of the people involved in the film was the culprit.

“I know that one of us did it,” Reynolds said. “There’s four of us: me, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Tim Miller the director. We all said at the beginning that somone should leak it, so the idea was planted, but I’m 70 percent sure it wasn’t me.”
