Is Agent Carter on its last legs? Star Hayley Atwell has signed on to star in a new ABC drama pilot, Conviction.

EW confirmed she’ll play a “brilliant but ne’er-do-well daughter of a former President, who is blackmailed into taking a job as the head of Los Angeles’ newly created Conviction Integrity Unit. She, along with her team of lawyers, investigators and forensic experts, work together to examine cases where there’s credible suspicion that the wrong person may have been convicted of a crime.” The project is from Liz Friedman (Marvel’s Jessica Jones) and Liz Friedlander (The Following).

Agent Carter has struggled mightily in the ratings and stars of TV shows typically never book a new pilot unless there’s a fairly decent chance their current show might not come back. Since both projects are at ABC, however (and perhaps because the network doesn’t want Carter fans thinking the Marvel show is doomed), we’re told the idea is to potentially do both shows if the network decides to give Carter a third round and order Conviction to series. (Though perhaps with Atwell doing Carter season 3 as a wrap-up limited series instead of a full order — it’s rather tough to make two broadcast TV shows at once.)

Marvel has staged a hugely impressive small-screen invasion over the last few years with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, and Netflix’s Daredevil and Jessica Jones. Launched last year, the Captain America spin-off Carter has managed plenty of critical acclaim, if not ratings, and if axed it would represent the company’s first cancelation of its modern-era production boom. Typically such decisions are announced at a network’s upfront presentation in May.
