The opening of Saturday night’s Republican debate was such an awkward mess that it almost defies satire. Almost.

On Monday night’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, host Stephen Colbert took a stab at recreating the gaffe, mocking how candidate Ben Carson failed to walk on stage after his name was called. Carson stood in a small hallway as the other candidates walked past, creating one of the election season’s best memes thus far. (The hosts of The View also made fun of his mistake.)

Colbert filled the Carson role on his show, standing still as members of Late Show house band Stay Human made their entrance onto the stage. And even as an announcer implored Colbert to move (and as cheers from the crowd grew louder) he stood still. Finally, after an agonizing amount of time — thought not as agonizing as the real thing — Colbert moved with help from a stage hand, and started his show.
