It’s hard to think of anything cuter than the Puppy Bowl, especially after this year’s edition included a puppy version of the NFL’s “Deflategate” scandal. But that’s exactly what James Corden did, inaugurating the first version of the “Baby Bowl” on his Monday night show.

Much like the Puppy Bowl (and, indeed, the Super Bowl), the object of the Baby Bowl was for its teams of players to get a football-shaped object from one side of a field to another. The Baby Bowl even included its own halftime show — still performed by Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Maybe Martin’s toy piano was too much for the babies, or maybe they just missed nap time, but the whole game fell apart in the second half as the babies descended into crying. Quite a case of, as one announcer put it, “unnecessary cuteness.”
