Mellie’s about to open up a brand new chapter for herself when Scandal returns, at least according to actress Bellamy Young.

As a reminder, we last saw the former First Lady making huge waves and rediscovering her confidence by successfully filibustering a vote concerning Planned Parenthood.

“Mellie left in a really good place after the filibuster. It’s sort of a brand new chapter for her,” Young said to EW at the SAG Awards this weekend. “She’s divorced, finally free from Fitz, and ready to try on her own: being a great mom, being a great senator, and hopefully being a great President.”

Young also teased a bit about how Mellie and Olivia might interact in the coming episodes: “[Mellie]’s very determined to get Olivia to run her campaign, which isn’t going to go down well,” Young said.

Scandal returns on Thursday, Feb.11 at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
