Before John Boyega donned a stormtrooper outfit or wielded a lightsaber, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens star appeared in a much more earthbound story of an L.A. family struggling with violence on the streets of Watts.

In Imperial Dreams, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2014, Boyega stars as Bambi, a father released from prison who learns to juggle caring for his son and his dreams to become a writer while the boy’s mother is in prison. The new teaser for the film offers a look at Bambi’s return to the violent urban world outside of prison, and how difficult that adjustment proves to me.

Boyega filmed Imperial Dreams before stepping into Finn’s stormtrooper boots, and the film won the Best of Next Audience Award at Sundance when it premiered. The Malik Vitthal-directed film does not currently have distribution, but Boyega’s new profile might help fix that. You can watch the new teaser for it above.
