Mr. Robot star Rami Malek lost the Golden Globe to Mad Men‘s Jon Hamm at Sunday’s show, but his mom wasn’t too torn up about her son losing.

“All she wanted to do was meet Jon Hamm,” Malek told Ellen DeGeneres Tuesday. “I’m like, ‘You understand that’s my competition, right? We’re both up for best actor.’ And she’s like, ‘It doesn’t matter.’ ”

Malek, being the good son he is, made his mom’s dreams come true by introducing her to Hamm. “And then we were sitting down and his name got called and he won, and she said, ‘He deserved it,’ ” Malek said, smiling. “I’m like, ‘Okay.’ No, no, she loves me to death, but I think she was protecting me to a certain extent. But he’s such a cool guy. He was so much fun and he is so deserving.”

Malek didn’t walk away completely empty-handed though: Mr. Robot won the award for Best TV Drama that same night, and Christian Slater won for his supporting role in the USA series.
