Back in 2013, Vine star Nash Grier posted a clip where he used a gay slur in response to an ad for a HIV test that said getting tested “is not a gay thing.” Modern Family Ariel Winter reminded the world of this is in a tweet over the weekend when she took advantage of a relevant hashtag: “#FavNashVid that one time when he was just super homophobic and ignorant? #whydoyouhavefans.”

Winter later elaborated by posting a note acknowledging that humans make mistakes, but that Grier repeatedly “spouted homophobic slurs.”

“You and I are fortunate enough to have access to television, the Internet, magazines, etc. that daily stress to us the importance of social and racial tolerance,” she wrote. “I remember seeing this stuff way before I was 14. When we were 14, teenagers were committing suicide from comments like yours.”

“You only apologized for that video and stopped using that phrase after it started affecting your pocketbook and chipping away at your fame,” she went on, referring to a tweet Grier posted in July 2014, where he said, “I apologize for anything negative I’ve said towards gays and for that matter anyone. I was young, ignorant, stupid, and in a bad place. I’ve moved on and learned from my mistakes and I am so truly sorry to anyone I have offended.”

Grier responded to Winter by tweeting, “I would LOVE to talk [to you] & explain why your opinion about others opinions are far from reality.” Winter rejected that offer: “lol I’m good,” she responded.

Winter is known for being outspoken on social media about the power of words, like this past fall when she encouraged her Instagram followers to “celebrate you and don’t let anyone’s comments allow you to think less of yourself” after she received some derogatory comments on a photo featuring her and her two nieces on the beach.
