The title implies numbness, but writer-director Tim Blake Nelson seems to want viewers to feel every last thing, piling on enough characters and Big Issue plotlines—cancer, addiction, infidelity, depression, even murder—to fill a semester’s worth of screenwriting classes. The cast (which includes Glenn Close, Sam Waterston, Kristen Stewart, and Corey Stoll) is strong, but the movie itself is a little exhausting, like a New York cousin to Paul Haggis’ Crash, with a smaller budget and a bigger vocabulary.
